MOFILM honoured to be part of the Shanghai Film Festival Grand Jury 2009

Ralph Cochrane & Danny Boyle @SIFF09

Shanghai, 14th June 2009 – Sat in room high in the Festival Arts centre in down town Shanghai, Ralph Cochrane is watching short films with the other members of the jury. The Shanghai Film Festival is Asia’s premiere film festival and this year includes guests such as Andy McDowell and Danny Boyle (fresh from his oscar success with Slumdog Millionaire).

Ralph co-founded MOFILM in 2007 after delivering the pioneering Sundance Global Short Film Festival for MobileĀ  with the GSM Association, which first saw world-famous Hollywood film makers produce made-for-mobile films.

MOFILM has worked closely with leading film festivals including Shanghai, Sundance and Cannes, as well as celebrities such as Robert Redford, Kevin Spacey and Spike Lee to promote mobile telephones and the Internet as a medium for watching short films around the world.

“I’m actually a little overwhelmed with the experience. We’ve been working with SIFF (Shanghai International Film Festival) for two years, specifically to encourage young film makers in China to work with mobile as a medium for watching films.” said Ralph. “The mobile market is exploding all over China and, with the introduction of 3G, its only a matter of time before data plans allow more downloading of content direct to devices. I’m here to judge the student short film section along with leading Chinese experts including a leading Asian film maker, the founder of Tudu (think Youtube for China) and two professors and teachers of film making from Shanghai and Beijing.”

“MOFILM has become well known for giving emerging film makers a platform to get noticed. Our involvement with Shanghai is a perfect example of this. Ever since the MOFILM project started with Sundance Institute and the GSMA we’ve been keen to get out and meet film makers to explain what works on mobile and the Internet, from our perspective. Interestingly there are films from all over the world submitted this year to Shanghai. Out of 656 films, twenty were shortlisted including films from Indonesia, Cuba and the UK.”
